The NSW Government’s Gaden Trout Hatchery is located on the Thredbo River and 10 km north-west of Jindabyne. The centre breeds and rears cold water sport fish and it is one of Australia’s main centres for breeding. Four breeds of fish produced here, rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and Atlantic salmon. Fish are used to stock dams and river systems in the Snowy Mountains, Southern Highlands, the Central Tablelands and New England areas.
As a visitor you can view and sometimes partake in feeding of the big fish in some of the hatchery’s brood stock ponds. Watch a 10 minute introduction video outlining the hatchery’s purpose and operations. Go for a walk around the beautiful grounds with one of the experienced hatchery staff.
Guided tours of the hatchery are conducted at 10am and 2pm daily.
